From Talent to Strategists: How Creators Are Reshaping Music Marketing

The Vogue Business of Influence series, drawing on Cannes Lions 2026 panels, reports that agencies like Ponte Firm and UTA's brand advisory group now treat creators as strategists rather than distribution channels.

From Talent to Strategists: How Creators Are Reshaping Music Marketing

Creator Consultants Are Now Driving the Marketing Funnel

Influencer activations grew 26 percent year-over-year, according to figures cited during the WWD Beauty CEO Summit by Traackr cofounder and CEO Pierre-Loïc Assayag, alongside Unilever U.S. chief strategy and brand communications officer Casey DePalma McCartney. That number reframes the creator economy for the music industry: talent is no longer the top-of-funnel asset — it is the full funnel. For a chart-driven pop market that already runs on algorithmic push and recoupable deals, the shift reshapes how artists package themselves.

The Brief Has Changed

Caroline Wilson of UTA described creators as "a marketing strategy" in and of themselves, rather than a prong of a larger campaign. Unnamed strategy director Nikita Walia framed the transition as a move from "make this content for us" toward "help us determine what is worth making in the first place."

That language matters for pop acts. Labels have spent the last decade measuring engagement rate and TikTok velocity; now they're negotiating against creators who sit inside the strategy room, not outside it. The terms of the deal — exclusivity windows, brand-safety clauses, content approvals — are being redrafted by parties who understand audience data as a balance-sheet line item.

Where Music Intersects

Coach's Cannes Lions launch of its &Coach content series offered a clean case study. The house partnered with Gen Z creators and talent including Paige Bueckers, Angel Reese, Malala, and PinkPantheress — a roster that crosses sport, activism, and music. Vogue notes that Coach intends to evolve the project and let it inform how the brand works with creators behind the scenes. PinkPantheress's inclusion positions a breakout pop artist inside a corporate marketing apparatus rather than a traditional endorsement slot.

Unilever's stated ambition to have a creator in every zip code, cited by DePalma McCartney, signals scale. Vaseline leaned on influencer partnerships to test "hacks" circulating on social media, and Dove built a campaign around concert-goers' body-odor complaints. Both moves required creators embedded in niche communities — the same segmentation logic pop labels apply when pitching regional DSP playlisting.

What to Track

The key indicators for the next two quarters are straightforward: the rate at which agencies convert creator-strategist hires into formal brand-deal roles; whether major-label marketing budgets are reallocated toward creator consultancy fees; and how music-streaming platforms price first-party creator data. TikTok creator Brandon Edelman, known as Bran Flakezz with 1.4 million followers, told Vogue that brands increasingly want creators to "talk back" and flag what campaigns are getting wrong — a feedback loop that, if formalized, would compress the A&R cycle into the campaign cycle. For an industry already running on weekly chart turnover, that compression is the metric worth watching.
