Hamilton’s Festival of Friends Marks 50 Years with a Massive Canadian All-Star Showcase

Hamilton's Festival of Friends clocks its 50th edition this weekend with a booking structure that reads less like a standard festival lineup and more like a Canadian catalog retrospective, according to Billboard's weekly music news digest. Running July 31 through August 2 in Gage Park, the milestone edition pivots on a Last Waltz–format Sunday closer curated by roots-rock supergroup Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, with roughly 25 rotating alumni taking one-song slots each.

The Anniversary Economics

Festival director Rob Rakoczy told Hamilton City Magazine the Sunday bill functions as a "house band" model, with Blackie and the Rodeo Kings — fronted locally by Tom Wilson — anchoring a parade of past headliners. Confirmed participants include Andy Kim, Maestro Fresh-Wes, Chantal Kreviazuk, Matt Mays, Brad Roberts of Crash Test Dummies, Ashley MacIsaac, Dan Hill, Bif Naked, Hawksley Workman and Harrison Kennedy, among others. The format concentrates programming costs on a single production rather than three discrete headliner sets, a structure that compresses talent overhead while monetizing legacy equity. Feist and Dallas Smith, both platinum-selling acts, anchor the Friday and Saturday nights respectively; Basia Bulat and Great Lake Swimmers fill out the supporting slate.

Five Decades of Programming Shifts

The festival's commercial trajectory tracks three distinct stewardship phases. Founder Bill Powell — at one point Wilson's manager — launched the event on a folk and roots base, booking Sylvia Tyson, Willie P. Bennett and Jesse Winchester at the debut. Loren Lieberman took over in 2000 and broadened stylistic scope, pulling in The Nylons, Sass Jordan, Randy Bachman and David Wilcox. Rakoczy assumed direction in 2017, relocated the event back to Gage Park after a brief Ancaster interlude, and has since booked Village People and Tanya Tucker alongside Canadian heavyweights Brett Kissel, City and Colour, The Sheepdogs and Monster Truck. Earlier international draws included The B-52s, Psychedelic Furs and Mickey Hart.
